ABOUT CHARLIE SPATS
When Charlie Spats completed high school in 2008, he graduated without plans for further education or any kind of structured career path. What resulted was a solid year of sitting at home browsing the internet and watching porn.
In this mostly-stagnant period of screen-staring, two important things happened. First, Spats took on a brief online internship with the web team of musician/social media mastermind Amanda Palmer. From the comfort of his own home, Spats helped manage the Post-War Trade merch store and read over anything and everything posted about AFP (Amanda Fucking Palmer) on Twitter, YouTube, and Google on the team's behalf. Working under Amanda Palmer threw Spats headfirst into the revolutionary world of running one's own business by properly utilizing the power of the Internet.
At the same time, Spats discovered queer pornography, and began to take his porn viewing quite seriously. He desired to share these important sex-positive visuals with others who could benefit from it, and struggled to find an ethical approach to sharing content with his friends without doing so at the expense of the companies he longed to support.
Spats began transforming his fanboy passion for porn into a legitimate career at the age of 19. He had spoken briefly with Bren Ryder about working with Good Dyke Porn as a performer, but was instead taken on first as an intern for the Vancouver-based company. Spats remained with Good Dyke Porn for roughly a year and a half. During this time, he worked on set both behind and in front of the camera, recruited new performers, directed out-of-town shoots, and represented Good Dyke Porn at the TNT Entertainment Awards of 2011 and the AVN Awards and Feminist Porn Awards of 2012. He was also put in charge of Good Dyke Porn's side project, the Good Queer Porn news blog, on which he posted scene reviews and provided weekly updates on what the industry as a whole was creating.[ More info: Crew Credits ]
The trips that Spats embarked on to Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Toronto on Good Dyke Porn's behalf allowed him to branch out and network with international faces of the queer porn industry. His close friendships within the San Francisco scene resulted in his first booked gigs outside of Vancouver, including videos for QueerPorn.tv, Indie Porn Revolution (formerly No Fauxxx), and James Darling's FTM Fucker. In conversing with various well-established faces and young queers wanting to get involved, Spats noticed a distinct imbalance in American queer porn companies - specifically ones based in San Francisco - versus Canadian ones. In an attempt to increase networking opportunities for Canadians, Spats collaborated with Winnipeg's Cherrystems to create the Canadian Queer Porn Network. So far, the industry in Canada is still rather sparse, but Spats has found performance work in Toronto with ASLAN Leather's House of Switch.
Back home in Vancouver, Spats has been working on a variety of smaller projects in order to increase queer visibility and sex-positivity. After a couple of years volunteering as a sex educator for youth, Spats switched his focus toward the older kink and queer communities, and collaborated with Miss Pussy Liquor and T-Bodies to integrate an inclusive queer bathhouse culture into the city. The result was sTeam, an all-genders bathhouse event that survived for two years before its borrowed venue closed its doors due to increased rent rates.
Charlie Spats' big project of 2013 is his "XXXperiment in online media", Porn For Everyone!. Alongside of PFE! porn production, Spats has several plans in motion to take advantage of new media to spread sex education and positivity through the internet.
